Largo Vibe Fest opens today at Largo Central Park, 101 Central Park Drive, kicking off a free three-day festival that runs through Sunday and marks the 30th season of the Central Park Performing Arts Center. For families looking for something to do this weekend without spending a dime, the park is the place: live music, hands-on art, food trucks, two artist markets and a Halloween-themed train ride are all packed into the grounds over the next three days.

Friday's hours run 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday stretches from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday wraps up at 3 p.m. after opening at 10 a.m. Admission is free all three days.

The headline act: a giant puppet that runs on crank power

The festival's marquee attraction is Squonk's "Joy Machine," a touring spectacle built around a towering puppet operated by hand cranks and levers, backed by a drum wall and a live band. It's scheduled to perform seven separate times across the weekend, so there are multiple chances to catch it without planning your whole day around a single showtime.

Beyond the puppet show, the festival lineup includes live music sets, interactive art installations, and workshops where visitors can try their hand at making something rather than just watching. A regional artists' market will have vendors from around the area selling work, and a separate Youth Entrepreneur Market gives young vendors their own space to sell to festivalgoers.

What else is happening at the park

Saturday adds one more draw for families: the Largo Central Railroad is running a Halloween Spooktacular, folding the park's small train into the weekend's costumed, seasonal programming. Food trucks will be on site throughout the festival for anyone who doesn't want to leave the park to eat.

The festival doubles as a season-opening celebration for the Central Park Performing Arts Center, which is marking its 30th year of programming in Largo. For a venue that's been part of the city's cultural life for three decades, the free weekend outside its doors is as much a chance to say thanks to the community as it is to draw new faces into the building for shows down the road.

Parking and exact festival maps for the weekend are typically posted closer to the event through the city's own event listings, so visitors heading out Saturday or Sunday may want to check ahead if they're trying to time it around the train ride or a specific Squonk performance.
